Ultimate Denmark by Train!
Are you looking for a cool-cation, trying to fight overtourism or simply wanting to visit a unique destination? If any of this is true for you, then you should definitely come to Denmark. Scandinavia offers a unique perspective in Europe, with modern architecture, fast public transport and Viking history!
This itinerary is meant to be done by train – to save money and get the most out of it, I suggest buying an Interrail/Eurail Pass, which allows you to save on train tickets while in Europe! If you want to know how it works, schedule a free consultation and I’ll tell you all about it. I’ll also leave the link to their official webpage at the bottom of the itinerary, if you want to look for yourself. Now let’s get started…
DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY
DAY 1 – 3: Copenhagen. Explore the capital in-depth by dedicating each day to a different area; start from the historical city centre, then spend a day in the peculiar Christiania, and don’t forget to get lost in Vesterbro! Copenhagen has a very high-end culinary scene, that requires early booking and a lot of research. Make sure to try both local food (smørrebrød) and international fusion cuisines.
DAY 4 – 6: Odense. A very quick ride will get you to Fyn, the first island west of Copenhagen. The archipelago south of this area is famous among nature-lovers, but the city of Odense is special in its own way. As the hometown of Hans Christian Andersen, a renowned author, and artist I’d add, the atmosphere is very different here compared to Copenhagen. The city is smaller but it offers a wide array of options.
DAY 6 – 8: Esbjerg. If you know my style, you’ll know I like to include a naturalistic escape in all my itineraries, so this is no different. Esbjerg, on the Western coast of Jutland (the Danish peninsula), presents the perfect conditions for many watersports and time spent in nature. There are many camping and glamping opportunities out here, to truly immerse yourself in the local culture.
DAY 9 – 10: Aarhus. It’s time to go up North! The second largest city in Denmark will take your breath away. Beautiful museums, art exhibitions and once again an interesting culinary scene will make 2 days go by fast. Not many people visit this city, thinking Copenhagen can convey the entirety of Danish culture… But they are very wrong. In Jutland, people are different and your experience will be as well.
DAY 11 – 12: Aalborg. If you love history and in particular the Vikings, this is the perfect place for you. The site of Lindholm Høje provides a unique perspective on Viking culture and daily life – you can’t miss it! On top of that, Aalborg is the perfect starting point for a day-trip to Skagen, the Northernmost point in Denmark, where the North and the Baltic Seas meet. This is also the ideal place to end your trip, in case you want to continue your Scandinavian adventure – ferries leave from nearby Hirtshals and Frederikshavn towards Norway, Sweden and even Iceland.
